Isaiah 46:8-13, Psalm 97, 99 – The sovereignty of God is well established in scriptures. God is over all, all-powerful, all-knowing and all-wise. Just as nothing was created without him, nothing is beyond his reach or beyond his rule.
When God decrees something, it will happen.
From the Human Side
Man can choose to rule his own life. God holds man accountable for the choices that he makes.
Whether we are a christian or a sinner, to hear that God is sovereign will make us feel differently. As christians we rejoice. As sinners we tremble.
The decisions and the choices that we make are made within the boundaries that are placed upon us by God. There are laws of nature that constrain what we can choose. There are things we cannot change, family, when we were born, how we were born, etc.
2 Thessalonians speaks of Gods restraint on an evil world… until God removes the restraint, at which time evil will abound more and more.
If God chooses to limit himself, it is within his sovereignty to do so.
Nahum 1:6 – Sinners try to ignore God. God does not ignore the sinner. Jonah knew God, he knew what God wanted him to do, but he didn’t want to do what God wanted him to. God was with him even as he tried to run from God. God taught Jonah a very valuable lesson. Rebels can run, but they cannot escape.
Acts 4:26-28 – Everyone was gathered together against Jesus to kill him. They were doing what God in his foreknowledge had decreed and decided should be done.
Revelation 20:11-15 – God has decided a time when he will bring about the final judgment. It will come.
From the Christian Side
For the christian to know God as sovereign is a wonderful blessing.
Those who choose God are chosen by God.
Because God is sovereign his promises are sure and true. God can and will carry out every promise he has made.
Psalm 139:6, Hebrews 11
God is with us.
God has purposes in all things that happen.
There is no chaos with God.
Even though we may be scared, bothered in many ways we are no less secure than when the waters are calm around us.
2 Corinthians 1:20 – God is sovereign. He rules over all. God gives man choice. He invites man to choose him. Man can choose God, or himself, but he is accountable to sovereign God.
