Why was Jesus born at the time and place in history that he was? God had a plan. He has always had a plan. He was born in the fullness of time, according to Galatians 4:4. What does that mean?
God’s timing is perfect. He does not operate on the same timetable that we do. God is outside of time. When God chooses to wait, He waits because of His mercy.
Some reasons for the timing of the birth of Jesus:
- When Jesus was born, the Jews were under Roman rule. They had reached a place of desperation. They needed outside assistance.
- The whole known world spoke the same language, which was Greek. The Gospel can’t spread if there is no common language.
- Lots of people were abandoning their idols. Rome had conquered them, and their idols had done them no good.
- The world was much safer. Rome had made travel much easier.
- Unlike other kings, Jesus was not only for the Jews but for everyone.
- John the Baptist prepared the way. John the Baptist was also a fulfillment of Scripture. He identified and baptized Jesus. He was not afraid. The time was right for the message to be spread throughout the known world.
Mary was available. She was willing to be used, although she had no idea what joy and sorrow it would bring to her. When God calls us, we need to be willing to do what he asks. God is preparing us for the next step. Isaiah 58:7-9 – My thoughts are not your thoughts. Even when we do not understand, we need to trust God for He always walks with us.
