This sermon – Why We Must Sing the New Song – was originally preached 2013.11.24 by John D Martin.

This message is part of a series preached at BMC in the fall of 2013 by John D Martin.

Here is a list of all the messages in this series.

  1. Why We Must Sing the New Song
  2. Profile of the New Song
  3. Lead the New Song
  4. Preserving the New Song

Often we fail to see music as a resource just like prayer. Singing is a resource that we should be using, right along with prayer.

2 Chronicles

The children of Israel went out singing and didn’t have to fight at all in the battle. Singing was the vehicle by which God worked here.

Songs Result in Supernatural Enablement

Paul and Silas prayed and sang in prison.

Nehemiah 8:10 – The joy of the Lord is our strength.

God is the origin of singing. At the creation all of the stars sang for joy. Music was an important part of creation.

When you need God’s help sing! God will hear that song and be drawn to that place.

Songs Cause God to Dwell in our Experience

David understood this. The first thing he did when he became king was set up the worship in the temple. Where God’s song is, that is where God dwells. David paid 4000 people to sing fulltime in the temple.

David was a man after God’s own heart. God is a singer. God wants his people to sing.

Zephaniah

Songs Speak to the World of the Spirit

2 Kings 3

It is important what kinds of songs we listen to and sing.

Songs Inspire Prophetic Insight

1 Chronicles 25

Psalm 96

We are to let the world know that God has an excellent character.

Psalm 100

We are told to come into God’s presence with singing. He hast told us to enter his presence with a gift, the gift of song. How often do we do that?

What the New Testament Says About Song

Ephesians 5:18 – Song is the authentic expression of the filling of the Holy Spirit.

Hebrews 13:15 – Song is the New Testament counterpart to Old Testament sacrifice. The sacrifice in the Old Testament was to be perfect. A perfect song is the best that we can do and that is how we should approach music, singing and songs.

Colossians 3:16

Happiness and Joy. Happiness is dependent on circumstances. It rises and falls. Joy is a constant it has nothing to do with circumstances. It is the sense of wellbeing that is given by the Holy Spirit. Joy is the infallible evidence of grace in the life.
