1 Peter 2:11-25 – This morning we’ll be talking about honorable conduct and how our conduct affects the world around us.
We see two possible effects that our conduct can have on the lost around us. First off, they could respond by joining us, this is the outcome we hope for the most! Secondly, they may see who we are and because of our excellent conduct quit attacking us.
When we think about our country and its problems, or our church and its problems, the “raw material” the people isn’t what changes. It is instead the things around us and the conduct we have.
How Should We Be Living?
Romans 13:1-7 – Recognize that authorities are appointed by God. We need to obey them not only because they can “put us in jail” or “fine us,” but we also need to obey for the sake of our conscience.
Titus 3:1-2 – Whether the president is a Republican or a Democrat or someone we agree with we need to honor them and be obedient. Some day we may get to the point where we need to disobey the government because of God’s laws and His word. The more concerned we are about that possibility the more we should be concerned about our consistency now.
Our good behavior needs to come as a package. Don’t love the brotherhood and be rude to a telemarketer. Consistency is vital. This is what the church needs to remember. We don’t want to look good from all sides but be hiding a “wrecked” side that is very inconsistent.
How Do We Get to the Place Where We Live This Way?
The simple answer to the question, “How do we get to the place where our conduct is good” is Jesus.
We are pretty messed up people. People who are salt and light to the world are being led by the Shepherd who is guiding us and is responsible for our healing.
Not only is there a conversion that happens. There is an ongoing walking with Jesus.
We are called to follow in the steps of Jesus. We must not find His teachings revolting, we need to admire and lift up and pattern ourselves after His conduct and example and teachings.
Our motivation in all these things needs to be having a good conduct for the Lord’s sake.
