This is one of the most difficult chapters in the Bible. Some of the verses are hard to understand. We don’t know exactly what all the errors were that Paul was addressing. Paul criticizes four things that we may or may not be guilty of.
The philosophy of man is the foundation for the three things that Paul says is wrong in verses 16-23. The first half of the chapter mostly talks about the adequacy of Christ to combat these false teachings and beliefs. Then Paul talks about the problem that he is trying to address.
