1 John 5:1-21 – There are a few questions in this passage that we will try to wrestle with a little this morning.
- What are the water and the blood? How do they testify?
- Why are verses 7 and 8 so different in different versions?
- What is a sin that leads to death? Is the death that John is talking about here spiritual or is it physical?
- What does it mean that Satan “can’t touch us?”
Treasure your life in the son. We are not like scuba divers with an air supply attached to them. No matter how good a life we try to live we need to live in the son or we will eventually die spiritually.
Pray for your brother’s life. All wrongdoing is sin and is damaging, but John is saying here that we should pray for each others relationships with God. That God would bring repentance and healing. Don’t just warn your brother, pray for him too. Don’t just pray for him, warn him too.
Be confident in the power and protection of Christ. The world is in the power of the evil one, but we are not under Satans power.
Keep yourselves from idols. This is an abrupt way to finish this chapter, life is in the Son, we are in him who is true, realizing and believing this we are called to keep ourselves from anything that would come between us and God. If we love the world the love of the Father is not in him.
