Psalm 127:1-5 – If God isn’t with you in the things that you do, they will turn out to be a waste of time and energy.
1 Kings 11:28-43 – The story of Jeroboam. He had a lot going for him, but he got scared. Jeroboam received a great promise from God. If you walk with me I will make of you a sure house!
1 Kings 12 – Jeroboam is king, but he is a nervous king. In this stressful situation he seems to have forgotten God’s promise to him. Jeroboam responds to the trouble that he was in and he made two calves of gold and set them up as “gods.”
1 Kings 14 – Jeroboams son is sick, so he sends his wife to Ahija the prophet. The result was a condemnation upon the house of Jeroboam. A very sad turn about from the original good place that Jeroboam started.
2 Chronicles 13 – 16 – the end of the story of Jeroboam.
There are two things that we want to notice here.
- Making compromises, when it comes to sin, is never the way to go. Perhaps it looks like the compromise will make things better, the end result is never worth it. Since all good and perfect gifts come from God, it is never worth making these compromises that will hurt the relationship that we have with God.
- God is the one, ultimately, who builds up and tears down. God’s purposes are not going to be defeated. No one can keep God from fulfilling his promises to us.
Unless the Lord builds the house, they that build labor in vain.
