A very very long time ago I went to Maranatha Bible School. In the second term, the choir director asked me to have a speaking part during a song.
About two days before the program, we had a little get together, with some singing. We sang the song, and I’m wondering should I do my part or not? Someone tapped me on my shoulder… so I did. After I was done, I was roped again and told… “You have a phone call waiting.
James 4:1-6
Where do war and fighting come from? Our appetites. We build up within ourselves pride.
God resists the proud. But gives grace to the humble. You can’t earn grace but being humble opens you to receive it.
(The story of Edison and Tesla)
Pride and humility…
What is humility?
C. S. Lewis: Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less.
Jesus didn’t have to die on the cross. He didn’t think less of Himself— instead He thought of us.
Romans 12:1-3
We can think highly of ourselves— just not more highly tha we should!
What does being humble benefit us?
It benefits us eternally.
Luke 14:11
I want you to think— how does it make Thomas Edison feel that he has gotten all the glory now? How does Tesla feel now about not being known?
Pride only gives us earthy gain. If we are only earthly minded we will have earthly reward.
Can we program our minds to see that glory and fame here don’t get you anything in eternity?
Our pride puts us in a position where we take the place of God.
God does not want us to feel worthless, however. He desires us to be humble.
Matthew 22:11
Tesla didn’t care about the credit or the praise— he cared about the work.
Like an axe— we are nothing on our own. Without being in the hands of almighty God, we can do nothing.
