The story of Joseph in Potiphar’s house in Egypt is an incredible story of one man’s integrity and obedience to his God.
Joseph was far away from home and alone. What would he do? How did he resist temptation? He knew God was with him. God had been with him even when his brothers threw him into a pit. God was with him in Egypt and had him elevated to a high status in Potiphar’s house.
Joseph gave Potiphar’s wife two reasons why he could not do what she wanted:
- He could not betray the trust her husband had in him.
- He could not betray God.
Knowing God was with him helped him to resist temptation.
Satan wants us to believe that the sin in our lives is not a big deal, but the fact is that sin has long-term negative results. There is always a consequence for sin.
We need to focus on avoiding and fleeing temptation. We need to be aware of our weaknesses. God does give us the strength to resist temptation and endure trials, but He also gives us the ability to flee temptation.
Joseph avoided Potiphar’s wife as much as possible and fled rather than fall into temptation.
We need to draw near to God and submit to Him. We need to spend time with God and nurture our relationship with Him. We need to resist the devil.
Do not dwell on sinful thoughts. Fill our minds with beneficial things. Repent of evil thoughts and actions. Do not let yesterday’s sins spoil today’s holiness. Focus on the positive things that we should and can do.
