Scriptures: Romans 8:9; Genesis 1, 2; I Samuel 10; II Samuel 23; Ezekiel 2:36-?; Isaiah 11, 42, 61;
A genuine Christian has the Spirit indwelling Him. And He does this for all believers around the whole world at once!
I’m afraid we are prone to take the Spirit for granted.
At creation, the Godhead worked in harmony, the Spirit hovering and brooding over the chaos.
During the Creation of man, the Spirit that had been big enough to enfold the entire world focuses on one man, Adam.
After the fall of man… the Spirit’s interest in the world continued. He strives with mankind, holding back the evil. He also continued to work with individuals.
One of these was Joshua. He was used in a mighty way as the children of Israel came into the promised land. Another was Saul, after being anointed, he was told by Samuel “the Spirit of the Lord would come upon him”.
The Spirit can change us. Sadly, the disobedience of Saul caused the Spirit to leave Saul.
We are also told about the anointing of David that the Spirit of the Lord came upon him. Gideon was another: God sent His Spirit on Him and He accomplished great things in faith.
We can see this Spirit brooding over this world, darkened by sin, and now prophesying of redemption.
David’s last words: The Spirit of Jehovah spake by me, and His word was on my tongue.”
Ezekiel experienced the presence of the Spirit as well.
But there was a prophesy of a new heart, and a new Spirit in Ezekiel. Instead of the hard-hearted people that Ezekiel was preaching to, God would have a new people that would be filled with the Spirit and have a new heart.
There are also the prophesies of Isaiah. Isaiah 11 and Isaiah 42 speak of the coming of the Spirit in Christ. This Messiah would have the Spirit upon Him and He would bring light to the gentiles.
This Person, this Messiah, would have the Spirit of the Lord, Jehovah, upon Him.
Hundreds of years later, Jesus of Nazareth read “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, He hath sent me…”
The work of the Trinity was happening. The Spirit was resting on Jesus as He fulfilled His mission. The life of God was being breathed into the world, as the new creation begins.
God, the Holy Spirit, is big enough to cover the whole world, and can breath life into us— if we will let Him.
