In the Old Testament we read about the Children of Israel being led out of Egypt by Moses. It was a great crowd of people. After much time they arrived at Mount Sinai.
Text: Exodus 31 and 32
It is one thing write the law of God on stone, to preserve it, to hold it, to teach it, review it, study it, etc… but it is quite another to get that law inside the heart and mind in such a way that a persons life is changed to reflect the message of the law of God.
Jeremiah 31:33 – God makes a covenant with the house of Israel. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be there God and they shall be my people.”
Ezekiel 11:19 – A hard stoney heart taken out and replaced with a soft heart of flesh.
Ezekiel 36:24 – God made a promise and he was faithful to his promise.
2 Corinthians 1:18-22 – God keeps his promises. God did send his word. God did convert hearts. God gives his spirit to work in us.
2 Corinthians 3:1-3 – We are an epistle. We are a letter that can be read by those around us.
Romans 8:1 – Our lives are read by other people as they see us and watch us living.
2 Samuel 12 – After David had sinned with Bathsheeba Nathan came to David and confronted him with his sin. David recognized his sin. Nathan replied and told him that his sin was put away… however… There was a consequence for his sin, regardless of whether or not the sin had been forgiven.
Romans 2 – If we sin, we are not writing a good letter.
1 Timothy 6:1 – If we call ourselves a Christian but aren’t living like Christ, we won’t be attracting people to God. In fact we’ll be doing the opposite, pushing people away from God.
It is possible for hearts to cool, to start to get stiff and to eventually return to stone. We need to continually commune with the Lord, and walk with the Lord.
