Mark 10:46-52 – We don’t know whether Bartimaeus was born blind or if it was something that happened to him later in life. Regardless, he faced a sever handicap that affected how he faced each and every day.
Bartimaeus had heard about Jesus. When a crowd passed by and Bartimaeus heard that Jesus was coming by he cried out to Jesus… and kept calling earnestly.
Jesus heard. Jesus healed. Bartimaeus followed Jesus, glorifying God.
If it hadn’t mattered much to Bartimaeus would Jesus have stopped? Would Jesus have continued his way on into town if he hadn’t cried out?
1 Corinthians 11, Galatians, Hebrews, Revelation – in each of these cases we can be sure that the shortcomings and sins hindered the progress of these people and these churches. It undoubtedly hindered the ability of these churches to help each other as brothers and sisters.
In dealing with these lacks and weaknesses, what difference would it make if we would call out as Bartimaeus did for the help of God?
Needs we Need to Deal With
Let’s take a look at some of our great needs.
- Psalm 139:23-24 – It’s so important to recognize our needs. It is quite easy to look past our needs and not see how big of a deal they are.
- James 1:22 – It’s important to see the steps that we need to take and then to do what we know we need to do. It is easy to be convicted about something but when it comes to the “doing” we tend to put things off “till tomorrow.”
- Luke 11 – God hears us when we pray. The Lord’s prayer describes so many of our needs so well. God hears the earnest, persistent prayers of his children and the Holy Spirit gives us power to know the things we need to do and to then live that kind of life.
Blind Bartimaeus had a need. It was a need that God cared about. What difference would it make in our lives if we would more often cry out in desperation to God to “know thy ways and walk in the everlasting way.”
