This sermon – Sitting at the Feet of Jesus – was originally preached 2013.12.15 by Jerrill Schrock.
Sitting at the Feet of Jesus
Luke 8:26-39
Mathew 12:16-21
How has Jesus healed you? What can he do for you? What should our response to him be?
It was a good day for the people here, the Gadarenes. But did they recognize how great a day it was?
We can come up with a pretty amazing description of this man who came to meet Jesus. He was a demon possessed man. He was naked. His home was in the tombs. The tombs that he was living in were nothing like the graveyards that we have around us today. We might would say that he wasn’t even living, but rather existing in a “departed place.”
When Jesus came along, this man knew who Jesus was. He fell before him.
Jesus went beyond the original plea of this man to “leave him alone.” Jesus saw his heart and his need. In verse 29 Jesus commanded the demon to come out of the man.
Unless we take the time to sit at the feet of Jesus we cannot really have a “right mind.” We can probably have a healthy mind but not a mind that is fully functioning as it could.
There are a lot of people who are filled with things. Lust. Greed. Evil. Cruelty. The only thing that is going to bring them out of this is Christ. If we are filled (possessed) with anything other than Christ, our lives will be extremely miserable.
The people of the town where this man had lived were afraid when they met one who had the power to cast out demons. They didn’t know Jesus.
This man had been a terror both to himself and to the community. When he was healed it was big news!
The villagers were so afraid that they asked Jesus to leave. They had experienced an “overload!” Notice Jesus here… he left.
The man who had been healed wanted to go with Jesus. He wanted to stay with Jesus. He wanted to stay close to Jesus. He may have been afraid that the demons would come back to him. But Jesus told the man to, “return to your house… tell them what God has done for you.”
Let us sit at Jesus feet. Especially during this Christmas season.
