This sermon – Called to Be Saints – was originally preached 2013.11.10 by Jerrill Schrock.
1 Corinthians 1:1-3
Corinth was a city of commerce that was a connection between two seas. The Christians in Corinth were very likely common Christians. In a lot of ways their situation would be more along the lines of our situation in our surroundings than other early church church’s.
Paul is writing here and he is writing to “the saints.” Not those who might become saints but rather to the saints who were in Corinth.
1 Corinthians 6
They had very real problems. But they were taking things to the courts instead of dealing with problems themselves.
Washed, sanctified, justified in the name of The Lord Jesus and the spirit of God. That is what is meant to be a saint.
What does it mean to be a saint?
Being a saint is probably more mundane than a lot of childhood story book characters. The Vatican doesn’t decide when or if we or a Christian is a saint, God does that.
Saints are those who are made holy in Christ. Saint literally means, to be holy or holy ones.
1 Corinthians 3:12
We are saints not because of work that we have done but rather because of the work that God has done in and through us.
Why does this matter?
We don’t want Christianity to turn into a celebrity culture. People love to cheer or back other people. But when it comes down to doing it ourselves it’s just more difficult.
At some level we would rather have someone who we can look up to and follow that is doing the work. God called us all to be workers and saints. Doers and not fans. Encourages of others but also doers.
Saints are not “self made” they are blood bought.
We are not bottom feeders. We are saints living in the grace of Christ. We are in Gods family. We must realize that God has given us a high calling. We are saints saved by grace, but we are also saved no longer sinners.
We are called to be saints. Not fans of saints.
