This sermon – Teach Us To Pray – was originally preached 2013.10.13 by Leon Yoder.
Scriptures used: Luke 11, Luke 3, Psalm, Isaiah, Hebrews 12, John 17, 1 Peter 5, James 5.
Today’s message is a reminder. It is a review. If we were in school it might be going over the alphabet again, or counting to 100.
- Moses prayed for God’s help to lead the children of Israel.
- Eliezer prayed for God’s help to find a wife for Isaac.
- Samuel prayed for the Children of Israel.
- Elisha prayed for a woman’s deceased child.
- The disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray.
- Jesus was an example of prayer.
Jesus would teach us to pray.
Two lessons we want to look at.
- Know the father to whom you pray.
- Ask the father for what you need.
Real prayer to God is first fellowship. Jesus pointed the disciples first to God. “Our Father who art in heaven.”
Parents normally care for their children. They want good things for their children. Jesus tells us that parents know how to give good gifts to children. If we know how to give good gifts to our children how much more will the Father of Lights know how to give us the things that we need?
We have a tendency to try to figure things out ourselves. But we are called to kneel before the heavenly father and ask him about our cares… all of them… Give them to Him.
Prayer isn’t just about us. We pray for others. We pray for ourselves.
Sometimes we pray and it’s silent. Nothing seems to happen. We’ve searched our hearts. We are as sincere as possible. We must not despair. Something is happening… if nothing else there is a change in you, you are more earnest, you are more sincere, you are communing with God.
We do know this though. God gives good gifts.
At times we are asking for the wrong thing. Maybe we are asking for a stone when God wants to give us bread…
No prayer – No Power
These passages that we’ve looked at us encourage us that when we know God and we humble ourselves and come before God in sincerity and holiness God hears and works. He works in our hearts. He works in the situations that we are burdened about.
When you pray, say “Our Father, which art in heaven…”
