Kingdom People & Trust
Matthew 6:24-34
Anxiety is an enemy of trust.
Anxiety About The Future
Jesus says to observe the birds. They do not reap or gather into barns -but the Heavenly Father feeds them. They are not preoccupied with the future. We can become so preoccupied with our future.
1 Timothy 6:6
Case in point – if God can take care of the birds (which are relatively insignificant) how much more will he take care of us?
Anxiety about physical things
Anxiety can’t add to our quality of life. In fact, it takes away from our quality of life. Take note of the flowers! Men – stop and smell the roses. It’s therapeutic. It helps us take note that the Heavenly Father takes care of even them. Even the most glorious things of man’s world, do not compare to the most glorious things in nature. Created natural beauty is always more beautiful than things than man can create . We learn from nature what the real quality of life is about. If God takes note of the green meadows that are here today and gone tomorrow, how much more will he take note of and take care of us, his eternal creation.
The Core Issue
In this passage, God is again pointing towards issues of the heart. Can we entrust ourselves into the will and care of God?
Food – Clothes – Shelter: good things that we need for survival. But these are the same things that the gentiles seek. There is much more to life than pursuing just these three things. Set your affections on things above. Our focus on life needs to be a spiritual heavenly focus.
For your heavenly father knows that we need these three thing.
What we should Seek
“Seek ye first the kingdom of god and His righteousness -and all these things shall be added unto you.” We are commanded to seek and to search for the things of the Kingdom of God and his righteousness. When we are in the act of seeking, everything else gets placed on the sideline. This is the way we as Christians should be seeking -letting everything else to fall by the wayside as we seek FIRST the kingdom of God. The kingdom of God is a priority. It stand above clothing food and shelter.
Romans 14:17 – the kingdom of God is not meat or drink.
Three Priorities in Kingdom Seeking
1) God’s kingship – He is master
2) God’s righteousness – He is Holy
3) God’s resourcefulness – He is resourceful
The standard of living for Kingdom people is not established by our peers. Let’s not compare ourselves among ourselves. As soon as we learn this the easier it will be to trust in God as our standard of righteousness. Food, clothing, and shelter are incidentals that God provides for us.
Can we trust Him or do we think we have to take things into our own hands.
Take No Thoughts For Tomorrow
When we have learned the lesson that Jesus is teaching here, we can live without anxiety in our lives. We can enjoy the moments of today, instead of being ruled by the master of tomorrow that so easily can rule our lives.
