This sermon – Kingdom People and Their Treasures – was originally preached 2013.09.27 by Ivan Weaver.
Friday Evening – Ivan Weaver
Mathew 6:19-24
Our attitude towards material things is important.
Earthly treasures do effect our attitude.
A NEGATIVE WARNING
A clear command “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth”
Material possessions have a tendency to master and control our lives. They have the power to bind us in evil. And they cause us to have divided loyalties.
John 6:27
2 Corinthians 4:18
Hebrews 11:13
These folks embraced the things they could not see. As we make our way through this life and it’s material, tangible things -we must not forget to live by faith.
Earthly things are temporary and will be destroyed. When we invest in material things we are making bad long term investment.
Luke 12:20,21
Proverbs 15:27 – Materialism can corrupt the spiritual well-being of our families.
1 Timothy 6:10 – Materialism can corrupt our faith. It is not the “possessions” themselves that are evil, but the attitude towards these possessions one earth.
James 2:5
1 John 3:17 – Materialism can corrupt our brotherhood
A POSITIVE COMMAND
Mathew 6:19 – BUT lay up for yourselves treasure in Heaven. A positive action that we can take.
Proverbs 23:5, Proverbs 27:4 – these material things are transitory -here today and gone tomorrow. They are all subject to loss.
Luke 12:33 – “Sell what you have and give alms….”
We need to make deposits that will not deteriorate.
When we invest in our own indulgences, we allow Satan to rob us from eternal treasures.
Where our hearts are, there is where we will spend our energies.
Where are OUR hearts?
Mathew 27:30 – This commandment helps us keep a balance. If our focus is on the wrong thing, we have fallen over the line into idolatry.
Mathew 6:22
A singleness of purpose keeps our inner being lighted with God’s presence.
If there is more than one master there is going to be conflict. It’s impossible to have two masters and be loyal to both of them.
Jesus doesn’t condemn wealth…but he does condemn becoming a slave to wealth.
Mathew 12:30 “He who is not with me is against me.”
James 4:4
Where is our heart -our desires – our ambitions?
Conclusion
Eternity is much vaster than our time on earth. Let us make every effort to search our hearts, and place our focus on laying up treasure in Heaven -where it will last eternally.
